Survival in Antarctica

Hut under construction

The basic necessity to survive the winter in Antarctica was a hut. Mawson designed prefabricated huts for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), and the expeditioners lived in tents while they built the huts. They worked until very late each day in the long daylight hours of the Antarctic summer.

In the following summer, the tents were used by the sledging parties. These could be confined to their tents for days by the strong winds and the cold. Without a tent they would have died. One group survived a blizzard that damaged their tent. They dug the snow out from under the floor of the tent and threw the snow out the door. As the tent was slowly lowered into the snow, it was protected from the howling wind.
